The Richmond, Virginia-based designer finds colour inspiration in her everyday life, experimenting with leather marbling and creating unique handmade objects and accessories
The brand, Molly Virginia Made, was boisterously introduced to our site by Katherine Fleming, the Provost of New York University. If one were to entertain the conceit of an internet site being endowed with a fairy godmother, then Katherine would be just that as she assisted the project immeasurably. When my intentions were divided between writing a book or inventing a site, Katherine embraced the concept of the Cabinet of Wonders with such alacrity as to inspire its digital creation.
Molly Virginia Made is a line of hand sewn, marbled leather goods featuring sleek clutches, wallets, more capacious bags as well as visually stunning coasters which will grace any bar cabinet or coffee table. The leather is not effected by iced drinks whose moisture visually have the effect of an enhancing vanish on the surface.
They also produce artfully coloured earrings. The brand was founded by Molly Campbell in Richmond, Virginia in late 2016.
What differentiates the brand rendering it unique, is that each dyeing process yields an individual pattern of melded colours, organic shapes and fluid lines.
No two pieces are ever the same.

Molly’s background is in painting and drawing and before she founded her eponymous brand, she headed up a gallery for several years. As an art student she was always taught that creating an actual work of art was always superior to crafting. Constantly there was the subtle inference that fine art was distinguished and praised above crafts. The more she creates her objects however, the more sure she is that this difference is meaningless.
The brand’s initiation was organic. In the winter of 2016, Molly was confined to her home because of the cold outside. Inspiration was ignited by boredom!
Intending on making a wallet for herself, she begun dyeing a piece of leather discovering that the process was such compulsive fun, she could not stop at that one item. Thus, Molly Virginia Made began. The hardest part of her role as founder is setting and retaining her schedule. She blames her creative background for her preference for imaginative and unplanned days making her wares.
Molly’s products come in a full range of vibrant colours spanning references to flame, turquoise and goldenrod for the earrings. The marbled leather goods are offered in visually pleasing, blurred combinations of nude and black, dark brown and other shades enigmatically termed cold and warm colours. The blended tones are especially satisfying to the eye.
Molly fashions her creations out of her home, touting Richmond as a vibrant hub full of creative people and talented makers
Molly fashions her creations out of her home, touting Richmond as a vibrant hub full of creative people and talented makers. She describes Virginia as a beautiful wild place and is always entranced by the organic lines, shades and twists of the James River which flows through the city. Molly also accredits her inspiration to the rolling, deep purple blues of the coloured Appalachian Mountains.
Molly still gets a thrill walking down the street and seeing someone clutching her bag or rocking her earrings. Her immediate plan is to develop the jewelry line and her constant inspiration is Virginia’s nature and her inner enthusiasm.
