Oleosophia

Olesophia’s First Harvest Manaki Extra Virgin Olive Oil is entirely made from Manaki handpicked olives which are harvested in very few parts of Greece.

Discovery

Oleosophia, a company producing extra virgin olive oils, was founded in 2018 by Marianna Devetzoglou and Aris Magginas in the village of Kalentzi, in the region of Corinth in the Peloponnese. They are another brand who approached our site which acknowledges what we are aiming to do, encourage small Greek producers.

For A Magic Cabinet we have selected the brand’s First Harvest Manaki olive oil, entirely made from Manaki handpicked olives which are harvested in very few parts of Greece. It is a limited edition product characterized by a mild taste and a fruity aroma.

This Corinthian brand is rich in antioxidants and has been heralded for its phenolic content by the World Olive Centre for Health.

The olives are gathered by hand in early October and taken to the press the very same day. Marianna and Aris collaborate with a certified local mill and are present during the production process, following every detail. After the press, the olive oil is stored in steel tanks, analyzed in a laboratory, and finally bottled.

Nature has her own wisdom and the Greek word for wisdom “Sophia” is included in the name. As nature speaks eloquently for itself, Marianna and Aris selected minimally designed bottles, dark enough to protect the valuable content.

Both of them believe in the ancient Greek philosophers and especially those who considered that human beings are connected with nature. Their logo shows a man and an olive tree hugging, and the heir motto is Socrates’ renowned quote “Know Thyself”.

Memory

Marianna studied Physics at the University of Athens and specialized in Materials for Energy and the Environment at University College London. She followed seminars on olive oil production and is a certified olive oil sommelier.

Aris, who oversees production and logistics, hails from a family that has been producing extra virgin olive oil for three generations. They are assisted by Myrto who is responsible for the quality assurance & management.

Oleosophia owes its existence to a love story. Marianna met Aris’ brother, George, in Kalentzi and they fell in love at first sight. Marianna had always loved nature and then developed a passion for olive oil and its aromas.

Narration

The family olive grove is located in the village of Kalentzi at the base of Mount Fokas where they cultivate 4000 olive trees. Being close to the sea and having an altitude of 300-400 metres, the location has an ideal microclimate for the Manaki olives.

Mariana feels serene when surrounded by the groves and she is amazed at the locals’ hospitality. Oleosohia will soon launch handmade soaps made of olive oil and local herbs and their groves will be open for visiting.
