In recent years, there has been a new focus on high end, local agricultural products including saffron from Kozani, Florina peppers, wines from the regions of Kozani and Amyntaio as well as specialized arts and crafts.

Western Macedonia is one the least densely populated parts of the country due to its mountainous landscape. Over half of the population lives in rural areas, with the rest focused around the towns of Ptolemaida, where 70% of the country’s power is produced, Grevena, Florina and Kastoria, famous for its lake and fur production. In recent years, there has been a new focus on high end, local agricultural products including saffron from Kozani, Florina peppers, wines from the regions of Kozani and Amyntaio as well as specialised arts and crafts. It might be the only Greek region without a coastline but it has stunning mountainous scenery, lakes and is now invested in winter tourism with two big ski centres in Florina (Vigla) and Grevena (Vasilitsa). Another local gem is the Arcturos bear sanctuary, which was also set up to protect other local wildlife, including wolves, jackals, deer and otters.
