Salty Bag

Stratis Andreadis gives upcycled sails a new life by turning them into unique bags. Salty Bag started a new trend in sustainable fashion in Greece.

Discovery

My first Salty Bag is made of crisp white sail fabric and has sturdy leather cross over handles. It is both capacious and stylish. I treasure it because it was given to me by a beloved fashion editor friend whose gifts are always imaginative and tasteful.

Salty Bag holds a unique position in the Greek marketplace, designing handbags, totes and suitcases suited to contemporary needs but with the least possible environmental impact.

Salty Bag holds a unique position in the Greek marketplace, designing handbags, totes and suitcases suited to contemporary needs but with the least possible environmental impact.

It was created in 2013, on the island of Corfu, by Stratis Andreadis.

The bags are made from decommissioned sails, endowing the used fabric with new vibrancy. Used bags can be returned for recycling and clients get a 30% off on any new purchase.

The level of craftsmanship, the time needed to create each product and the durability of the materials are what makes these bags unique.

Stratis works with new Greek designers who come up with original ideas or re-create classic bags, as part of the brand’s legacy range.

A white bag has been made with polyester from a cruising sail boat. If it is yellow, then it comes from highly durable kevlar used in competitive sailing. The thinner and more colourful materials tend to be nylon.

Memory

Stratis studied philosophy and in his spare time is involved in competitive sailing.

In 2013, he took part in a sailing seminar in Corfu, which completely changed his outlook on life. He thought about how the attendees had to face the cold and many hardships to return home from their voyages and recount their adventures. The same applied for the stories the sails could tell. He decided to create his company, Salty Bag, and make environmentally conscious products which had their own powerful narrative.

He was fully aware that the Greek fashion industry did not offer many refined, handmade products sourced from natural ingredients compiled with environmental and social awareness. The terrible track record some of the fashion industry concerning exploitative labour is something that always plays on Stratis’ mind.

Narration

Salty Bag is headquartered in Corfu’s new town, in a modern multi-story building and employs five people.

Stratis does have a connection to the Greek islands, but to Chios and Poros, not Corfu.

He was charmed by the island of the Phaeacians because it bears no sign of the Ottoman influence thus offering an alternative version of Greece.

The architecture in Corfu’s Old Town combines Venetian, English and French influences.

The famous Liston, the central street in Corfu town, was built during the island’s French occupation (1807-1814), by Matthieu de Lesseps with the help of Greek engineer Ioannis Parmesan and is reminiscent of the rue de Rivoli in Paris. It is a series of stately homes, with imposing arcades on the ground level. These arches, called “voltes” locally, house cafés and restaurants.
