It is in this region that we also find one of the most developed wine producing hubs of the country, focused around the city of Drama.

This administrative region covers the north-eastern part of mainland Greece and two islands, Thassos and Samothrace. It borders Turkey and Bulgaria and is home to the only remaining part of Greece’s indigenous Muslim community after the Greco-turkish population exchange following the 1923 treaty of Lausanne. This cultural and religious mix is evident in the architecture of some of its main cities, including Kavala and Xanthi. It is in this region that we also find one of the most developed wine producing hubs of the country, focused around the city of Drama. The vineyards here were some of the first to be involved in both making Greek wine accepted by otherwise sceptical Greeks, while also exporting to a number of overseas territories. It is also a region steeped in history, from ancient archaeological sites and Byzantine and Muslim architectural gems, all the way to wonderful folk art, like that of silk weaving.
